What if I can’t breathe?
When
I awoke from it all
feeling
quite well, quite whole and healthy
and
good for the first time
He
was there still holding my warm hand
Yes,
it was my hand
Yes,
it was warm
“What
if I can’t breathe?” I said.
“You
don’t have to,” He said. “You can if you
want,
but you don’t have to.”
His
voice was like the sound of many waters
like
unto the Son of Man
He
smiled the way an angel might smile
“We
can go now.”
“How
far? Where?”
“As
far as you want. Past the moon and
sun. Past
everything
you’ve seen or known. Beyond the
farthest
glint
in your dark universe. Past your
universe.
Or
we can be there in an instant.
In
the twinkling of an eye.
It’s
up to you.”
“But
how? Where’s your rocket ship?”
He
laughed
“Let’s
go,” he said.
And
we were away
faster
than the speed of light
faster
than the imagination
slicing
through the center of the solar sun
bright
flicker like a flashbulb
I
was getting used to not breathing
unless
I wanted to
